United Airlines will not resume its Newark-to-Dubai route before March 2027, even as the carrier restarts nonstop service between Newark and Tel Aviv in October 2026. The airline points to continued regional instability, including missile and drone activity near UAE airspace, as the reason Dubai service remains grounded while other Middle East routes come back online.
Quick Answer
- Dubai route status: Suspended until at least March 2027.
- Tel Aviv route status: Resuming in October 2026 with daily Newark-Tel Aviv flights.
- Why: Ongoing regional instability and high war-risk insurance premiums make the Dubai route financially unviable for now.
- Aircraft: United plans to use a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for the restarted Tel Aviv service.
What United Airlines Confirmed
United Airlines confirmed it will resume nonstop service between Newark Liberty International Airport and Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport in October 2026, operating the route daily using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The airline had suspended Tel Aviv flights in June 2025 following escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, which led to regional airspace closures and safety warnings. United was the first American carrier to previously return to Tel Aviv after earlier conflicts, and this restart follows a ceasefire and a broader easing of regional security concerns.
Why Dubai Flights Remain Suspended
Unlike Tel Aviv, United’s Dubai route will stay grounded until at least March 2027. The airline cites continued Iranian missile and drone activity near United Arab Emirates airspace, which forces costly flight detours, reduces available flight slots at Dubai International Airport, and keeps war-risk insurance premiums prohibitively high for international carriers operating in the region. Before its suspension, the Newark-Dubai route had been one of United’s most profitable long-haul services, connecting the New York metropolitan area with the UAE’s commercial hub.
A Route With a Complicated History
This is not the first time United has had to make difficult decisions about its Dubai service. The carrier previously ended its Washington-Dubai route entirely back in 2016 due to competitive pressure from subsidized Gulf carriers, a decision made under very different circumstances than the current safety-driven suspension. The route’s on-and-off history highlights how sensitive Gulf-region flying can be to both competitive and geopolitical pressures.
What This Means for Travelers
Travelers who previously relied on United’s direct Newark-Dubai service will need to use a connecting itinerary through a codeshare partner or another carrier for the foreseeable future. Those flying to Tel Aviv, by contrast, should expect United’s daily Newark service to resume in October 2026, with the airline signaling it may gradually rebuild frequency and potentially add routes from other US gateways such as San Francisco or Washington Dulles if demand supports it, though no formal announcements on additional routes have been made yet.
How War-Risk Insurance Shapes Airline Route Decisions
War-risk insurance is a specialized coverage airlines carry for operating in or near conflict zones, and its cost can swing dramatically based on the perceived threat level in a given airspace. When missile or drone activity increases near a flight corridor, insurers raise premiums sharply, sometimes to the point where flying a route profitably becomes impossible even if passenger demand remains strong. This is a major reason airlines can suspend a lucrative route like Newark-Dubai for safety and cost reasons even when there is no direct ban on flying there, since the economics simply stop making sense once insurance and detour costs are added up.
How Other Airlines Are Handling Gulf Routes
United is not alone in navigating this cautiously. Airlines with strong historical ties to the Gulf region, including European and Gulf-based carriers, have had to make similar route-by-route judgment calls based on real-time airspace risk assessments, with some adjusting flight paths to avoid affected corridors entirely rather than suspending service outright. The patchwork of different carrier decisions on Gulf routes reflects how unevenly airlines are weighing the same underlying security picture, depending on their individual insurance arrangements, fleet flexibility, and regional partnerships. Business travelers who relied on the route for meetings and industry conferences in Dubai have increasingly shifted toward one-stop itineraries through European hubs such as London, Frankfurt, or Istanbul, which typically add several hours to total travel time but currently offer far more schedule reliability than waiting on a direct Newark-Dubai restart.
What Happens Next?
United has set March 2027 as its current target for reassessing the Dubai route, though that date could shift further depending on how the regional security situation develops. Travelers planning trips to the UAE in the meantime should check directly with United or explore alternative airlines serving Dubai nonstop from the US while the Newark route remains paused. United has not ruled out revisiting the March 2027 target earlier if regional conditions stabilize faster than expected, and the airline says it will continue reassessing the route on an ongoing basis rather than waiting until the target date to make a final call.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is United Airlines flying to Dubai right now?
No. United’s Newark-Dubai route remains suspended and is not expected to resume before March 2027. Frequent flyers holding miles or credits originally booked for the Newark-Dubai route should contact United directly, since the airline has generally offered rebooking flexibility for passengers affected by the ongoing suspension. The situation also underscores how differently airlines can treat geographically similar routes: Tel Aviv and Dubai are both Middle East destinations, yet one is returning to full daily service while the other stays grounded, showing that these decisions are made corridor by corridor rather than region by region.
Why did United suspend its Dubai flights?
The airline cites ongoing regional instability, including Iranian missile and drone activity near UAE airspace, along with high war-risk insurance costs.
When is United resuming flights to Tel Aviv?
United will resume daily Newark-to-Tel Aviv flights in October 2026, using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
Has United suspended Dubai flights before?
Yes. United previously ended its Washington-Dubai route in 2016 for competitive, rather than safety, reasons.
What should I do if I need to fly to Dubai from the US?
Check with other carriers offering nonstop or connecting service to Dubai while United’s Newark route remains suspended.
