Spider-Man: Brand New Day remained the number one movie at the North American box office for the weekend of September 4-6, 2026, earning about $18 million and pushing its domestic total past $917 million, even as Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continued closing the gap in its eighth weekend of release. Animated comedy Coyote vs. Acme held third place, while newcomer By Any Means opened in fourth.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Still Dominates
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now spent more than five weeks at or near the top of the domestic box office chart, crossing $917 million domestically as of the September 4-6 weekend despite a 20 percent weekend-over-weekend decline. That kind of staying power at 38 days into release signals unusually strong word of mouth and repeat viewership for a superhero sequel, especially compared with the steeper single-digit-week drop-offs typical of the genre.
The Odyssey Keeps Climbing
Christopher Nolan’s historical epic The Odyssey has proven to be one of the more durable releases of the year, adding another $13 million in its eighth weekend and pushing its domestic total to roughly $584.8 million with only a 9 percent weekly decline. Its slow, steady climb rather than a front-loaded opening suggests strong audience recommendations are carrying the film well past its initial release window.
Coyote vs. Acme Opens Strong
The long-delayed animated comedy Coyote vs. Acme opened in third place with roughly $33.8 million in its first ten days, playing in more than 3,700 theaters. The film had a notably troubled path to release, having been shelved and later revived, which makes its solid opening performance a notable story in its own right for family audiences heading into the fall.
Other Movies to Watch
By Any Means debuted in fourth place with a $7.4 million opening weekend across roughly 2,900 theaters, while horror sequel Insidious: Out of the Further continued a steady run, adding $6.5 million for a $54.1 million domestic total after 17 days. Further down the chart, Pixar’s Cars, PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, and The End of Oak Street all remained in wide release, showing the typical mix of family and horror titles that define the late-summer box office period.
What This Means for the Fall Box Office
With Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey both still performing well into their second and third months of release, exhibitors are heading into the traditionally slower fall season with two proven audience draws still filling seats. That reduces pressure on upcoming fall releases to carry theaters alone, while also raising the bar for any new blockbuster hoping to unseat Spider-Man: Brand New Day from the top spot.
How 2026 Compares to Past Box Office Years
Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s run past $917 million domestically places it among the strongest performers of the year, alongside earlier 2026 hits like Michael, which earned roughly $328 million total, and The Devil Wears Prada 2, which reached around $203 million domestically during the summer season. The gap between this year’s top performer and the rest of the field highlights how concentrated box office revenue has become around a small number of major franchise releases, even as mid-budget films like By Any Means continue finding room to open in the same crowded marketplace.
What to Watch For Next
As Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey both move further into their runs, the key question for exhibitors is whether either film can maintain enough weekly momentum to challenge the year’s biggest hits before awards-season prestige films and holiday blockbusters begin crowding the release calendar later in the fall. Coyote vs. Acme’s stronger-than-expected opening also gives Warner Bros. a data point worth watching, given the film’s unusual path to release after being shelved for tax purposes before eventually reaching theaters. Analysts tracking this weekend also noted that the overall marketplace stayed remarkably stable week to week, with no single new release dramatically reshaping the top five, a pattern that typically holds until major fall awards contenders and holiday tentpoles begin rolling out from late September onward. Expect that quieter pattern to hold for one or two more weekends before the fall release slate accelerates.
Domestic vs. International Performance
Domestic box office figures only tell part of the story for a global franchise release like Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which typically earns a significant share of its total revenue from international markets, particularly China, the UK, and other major territories where the Spider-Man franchise has historically performed strongly. The Odyssey, as an original epic rather than a franchise sequel, tends to rely more heavily on steady domestic word of mouth and awards-season positioning to sustain its run, which helps explain its unusually gradual, long-tail earnings pattern compared to typical blockbuster openings that front-load most of their revenue into the first two weekends. Studios watch this domestic-to-international ratio closely when greenlighting sequels, since a title that leans heavily on international revenue faces different risks from currency fluctuations and regional release timing than one built primarily around a strong domestic audience base.
