How the New Champions League Format Works
This season continues the Champions League’s expanded 36-team “league phase” format, in which every team plays eight different opponents across the season instead of being grouped into small pools. Defending champion Paris Saint-Germain opened its title defense at home against Slovan Bratislava, coached by club legend Yaya Toure, who became the first African head coach to lead a team in the league phase. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, two of the tournament’s traditional favorites, opened their campaigns on separate days, with Madrid hosting Inter Milan on September 8 and Bayern hosting Bodo/Glimt on September 10.
Barcelona 5-1 Feyenoord: The Biggest Result of the Opening Round
Barcelona delivered the standout scoreline of matchday 1, beating Dutch side Feyenoord 5-1 at home. The result immediately marked Barcelona as one of the sides to watch early in the competition and set a high bar for goal difference heading into the following rounds.
Arsenal’s Away Win at Napoli
Arsenal, last season’s runners-up, opened this year’s campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win away at Napoli, a trickier assignment than many of the other opening fixtures given Napoli’s strength at home. The narrow scoreline suggests a tightly contested match, and the away win gives Arsenal a strong start to its bid to go one step further than last season’s final appearance.
Other Notable Results
Paris Saint-Germain’s 6-1 win over Slovan Bratislava was the joint-highest scoring match of the opening round alongside Barcelona’s win, a strong statement from the defending champions in Yaya Toure’s coaching debut on this stage. Manchester City kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 away win at Porto, while Real Madrid needed a 2-1 win at home over Inter Milan to open its campaign. Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Anfield, a repeat of last season’s opening-day fixture between the two sides, which Liverpool also won, 3-2, at the same venue.
What This Means Going Forward
With eight league-phase matches ahead for every club before the knockout stage begins, matchday 1 results carry less long-term weight than in the old group-stage format, but they still set an early tone. Barcelona and PSG’s high-scoring wins put them among the early pace-setters on goal difference, while Arsenal’s narrow away win at Napoli shows the kind of gritty result that can matter later when the league table is decided on fine margins. Matchday 2 fixtures are scheduled for October 13-14, 2026, when Arsenal hosts Lille and Atletico Madrid travels to face Manchester United.
Full Matchday 1 Schedule Recap
Matchday 1 fixtures were spread across three days, September 8, 9, and 10, 2026, to accommodate the expanded 36-team format. The September 8 fixtures also included Lille 2-3 Real Betis and Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Villarreal, both high-scoring, closely fought matches that showed the unpredictability the new format can produce even among less heavily favored sides. Fixtures continuing into September 10 included Bayern Munich hosting Bodo/Glimt, Manchester United hosting debutant club Sabah, and Como facing RB Leipzig, rounding out the full 18-match opening round.
Storylines to Watch This Season
Yaya Toure’s appointment as Slovan Bratislava head coach made him the first African coach to lead a team in the Champions League league phase, a notable milestone even though his side suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat to PSG in his debut. Debutant club Sabah, from Azerbaijan, is making its first appearance in the competition’s league phase this season, opening against Manchester United. Meanwhile, both Real Madrid and Liverpool needed to come from behind or hold on for narrow wins in their openers, a reminder that even the tournament’s traditional heavyweights are not guaranteed comfortable results under the newer, more demanding eight-game format.
Why the League Phase Format Rewards Consistency
Because every club faces eight different opponents rather than the same three rivals twice, small margins across a longer campaign matter more than they did under the old group format. A single heavy loss, like Slovan Bratislava’s 6-1 defeat to PSG, is harder to recover from over eight games than it would have been in a six-game group stage, which makes strong starts like Barcelona’s and PSG’s especially valuable heading into the knockout playoff qualification race. Clubs that stumble early, such as Villarreal and Lille after their narrow away defeats, will need to win most of their remaining fixtures just to stay in contention for a top-24 finish that guarantees a place in the knockout playoffs. The top eight finishers advance directly to the round of 16, positions nine through 24 enter a two-legged knockout playoff round in February, and the bottom 12 clubs are eliminated from European competition for the season, which is why consistent points collection across all eight matches, rather than one or two standout results, ultimately decides which sides progress deep into the spring.
