Wonka's The Golden Ticket: Cast, Episodes & Release Time (Netflix)

Wonka's the Golden Ticket cast and episodes

Netflix’s lineup this week is a genuine study in contrasts: on one side, a Tom Cruise blockbuster finally making its long-awaited streaming debut; on the other, twelve real people stepping through the gates of a life-size chocolate factory to compete for a life-changing prize. Top Gun: Maverick and Wonka’s The Golden Ticket couldn’t be more different in tone, but together they’re driving two of the biggest search spikes on Netflix this month, and both have generated their own wave of specific, high-intent searches from people trying to pin down exact details before they hit play.

Here’s what’s actually happening with both titles — including the exact release details, full cast breakdown, and episode count for Wonka’s The Golden Ticket that most people are searching for right now.

Wonka’s The Golden Ticket: Release Date and Time

Wonka’s The Golden Ticket premieres globally on Netflix on September 23, 2026, with a two-part finale following on September 30. Like virtually all Netflix Originals, new episodes drop simultaneously worldwide at 12:00am Pacific Time (3:00am Eastern Time, 8:00am UK time), meaning the exact local release time depends entirely on your time zone rather than a single fixed hour everyone shares. Episodes are being released weekly rather than all at once, so this isn’t a binge-the-whole-season-in-one-night release — the competition unfolds gradually over several weeks, building toward that two-part finale.

What Is Wonka’s The Golden Ticket?

Wonka’s The Golden Ticket is a reality competition series inspired by Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the beloved 1971 film adaptation, timed to coincide with the movie’s 55th anniversary. Twelve lucky “Golden Ticket” winners, each bringing a partner of their choosing, step through the gates of a full-scale replica of Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Once inside, they face a series of physical, mental, and moral challenges — games, tests, and temptations designed to push them to their limits — in what Netflix is calling a “high-stakes social experiment.” Only one contestant walks away with what’s been described as a “lifetime supply of money.”

Showrunner Alison Holloway explained the show’s central hook to Netflix’s Tudum: contestants received a chocolate bar and didn’t know until they unwrapped it whether a golden ticket was hidden inside. Co-showrunner Emer Harkin has described the format’s emotional core as being about “your ride or die — the person you can’t do without,” since every contestant had to choose a partner meaningful enough to bring into the factory with them.

Wonka’s The Golden Ticket Cast and Episodes

The series runs nine episodes total, released weekly, with the season closing out on a two-part finale. The 24 contestants are organized into 12 pairs, and Netflix has been clear that “nobody in this group is a plus-one” — every partner had to be a compelling character in their own right, not just a passenger. The full lineup:

Marcy (63, retired) and JoAnne (60, homemaker) — best friends of 20 years from New Jersey and Arkansas, brought together by a shared love of the original film
Shawn (64, special education teacher) and Garrison (30, partner marketing manager) — a mother and son from rural New Jersey competing for a life-changing payout to support their family
Ray (79, retired) and Jackson (25, bartender) — grandfather and grandson, longtime travel partners from Texas and Florida
Bill (63, retired) and Kayla (34, consulting) — a father-daughter duo with a shared sentimental history with the 1971 film
Tatum (27, fashion consultant/social media manager) and Kellye (61, professional singer/actor/musician) — a mother-daughter pair with a pageant background, including a former Miss America
Everett (36, travel advisor/marketing director) and James (38, HR manager) — brothers from San Francisco who bonded over reality TV growing up
Bryce (22, roofer) and Taylor (23, phlebotomist) — high school sweethearts from Montana together four years
Nick (37, DJ) and Jason (49, DJ/event company owner) — longtime professional partners who’ve DJed weddings and corporate events together for a decade
Gabrielle (22, DJ/choreographer) and Sasha (24, entrepreneur) — best friends of 21 years who call each other sisters
Ziad (32, fitness/nutrition/lifestyle coach) and Austin (29, content creator) — friends of six years bonded over a shared obsession with fitness
Ava (25, creative producer) and Jeffrey (69, business owner) — a father-daughter team, with Ava describing herself as a self-sufficient “Veruca Salt”
Moon (29, singer) and Hunter (31, general contractor) — brothers from Kannapolis, North Carolina, and self-described lifelong Wonka superfans

The show also brings back a piece of the original film’s history: Rusty Goffe, who played an Oompa Loompa in the 1971 Gene Wilder movie, reprises the role here, celebrating his 80th birthday on set during production — nearly six decades after celebrating his 21st on the original film’s set.

The AI Gene Wilder Voice, Explained

The most talked-about — and most debated — element of Wonka’s The Golden Ticket is its narrator. Rather than casting a new host, Netflix and production company Eureka Productions used AI voice technology from ElevenLabs to recreate the voice of Gene Wilder, who originated the role of Willy Wonka in the 1971 film and died in 2016. The recreation was made with the explicit consent and involvement of Wilder’s estate. His wife, Karen B. Wilder, said in a statement that she was “delighted” the series “celebrates the warmth and imagination that he brought to the role, introducing that magic to a new generation while honoring the fans who have cherished it for decades.”

The choice has divided early reactions. Some outlets have embraced it as a heartfelt tribute timed to the film’s 55th anniversary; others have called the AI recreation unsettling, arguing that no synthetic voice can replicate the specific warmth Wilder brought to the role, estate approval notwithstanding. Either way, it’s become the single most-discussed detail of the show ahead of its premiere, and it’s worth going in aware of what you’re about to hear.

Meanwhile in Australia: Where the Show Was Actually Filmed

Despite its very American cast, Wonka’s The Golden Ticket was made entirely in Australia. Production company Eureka Productions built the full-scale chocolate factory set at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast in Queensland, filming in late 2025 with support from Screen Queensland and the City of Gold Coast, part of a broader push by Australian state governments to attract major international streaming productions with local tax incentives and production support. It’s a detail that rarely shows up in the marketing but matters for anyone tracking where big international unscripted formats are increasingly being built — the Gold Coast has become a go-to production hub for large-scale reality and competition sets specifically because of that combination of studio infrastructure and government incentive.

Top Gun: Maverick Finally Lands on Netflix

The other major arrival this month is Top Gun: Maverick, the 2022 Tom Cruise sequel that’s spent years bouncing between Paramount+, various international licensing deals, and physical/digital purchase before finally becoming part of Netflix’s core library in several markets this September. What’s on Netflix has flagged it as one of the platform’s biggest “long-awaited streaming debuts” for the month, alongside titles like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

For anyone who missed it: Top Gun: Maverick picks up more than three decades after the original 1986 film, with Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) still flying as a test pilot despite three decades of dodging the promotions that would ground him. Called back to train a new generation of Top Gun graduates for a dangerous, highly specialized mission, Maverick is forced to confront both his own limitations and his complicated history with Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his late best friend and former co-pilot, Goose. The film also stars Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, and, in his final film role, Val Kilmer reprising Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.

The film was a genuine cultural phenomenon on release, grossing over $1.4 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise’s career, and earning six Oscar nominations including Best Picture. Its arrival on Netflix gives subscribers who never caught it in theaters, or who want a rewatch, easy access to one of the best-reviewed action blockbusters of the past decade without an extra rental fee.

Why These Two Releases Are Being Talked About Together

On paper, a Tom Cruise fighter-jet sequel and an AI-narrated chocolate factory game show have nothing in common. But their simultaneous arrival says something about how Netflix builds its monthly slate: pairing a guaranteed-audience theatrical blockbuster with an ambitious, high-concept original format lets the platform capture two very different search and viewing behaviors in the same week. Searches for “what’s new on Netflix this week” spike around both kinds of release, and Netflix’s own release calendar for September 2026 leans into that same variety, also bringing in titles like Best of the Best, a new season of The Gentlemen, and Emmy-adjacent factual programming in the same stretch.

What Else Is New on Netflix This Week

Wonka’s The Golden Ticket and Top Gun: Maverick aren’t arriving in isolation. Netflix’s September 2026 slate has also included Best of the Best (an ensemble comedy featuring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Priyanka Kedia), a new season of The Gentlemen, and a steady stream of licensed catalog titles rounding out the month. For anyone building a watchlist, pairing a rewatch of a proven blockbuster like Maverick with a binge-friendly, weekly-release competition series like Wonka’s The Golden Ticket is a reasonable way to cover both moods in a single subscription month.

How AI Search Is Answering Questions About This Week’s Netflix Releases

Search behavior around new streaming releases has shifted meaningfully toward AI-generated overviews and voice assistant answers, and a few patterns are worth understanding if you’re trying to get a fast, accurate answer to “what’s new on Netflix” style questions:

Exact dates and times matter more than general timing. A query like “Wonka’s The Golden Ticket release time” is looking for a specific, sourced answer (12:00am PT / 3:00am ET), not a vague “sometime this week” — content that states the precise global release convention tends to satisfy that intent better than content that only gives a date.
Cast and episode-count questions favor structured lists. Searches like “Wonka’s The Golden Ticket cast and episodes” are direct, factual lookups, which is why AI systems tend to favor clearly labeled cast lists and episode counts over narrative prose descriptions of a show’s ensemble.
“New on Netflix” queries are inherently time-sensitive. Because Netflix’s library changes weekly, AI systems and search engines alike heavily prioritize the most recently published, clearly dated sources for this category of query over older, evergreen “best of Netflix” roundups.
Streaming “debut” language signals something specific. Questions about whether a previously released film like Top Gun: Maverick is “new” to a platform benefit from distinguishing between a title’s original release date and its streaming debut date on a specific service — conflating the two is a common source of confusion in both search results and AI summaries.

How Wonka’s The Golden Ticket Fits Into Netflix’s Reality Competition Strategy

Wonka’s The Golden Ticket didn’t arrive out of nowhere. It’s the latest entry in a genre Netflix has been steadily building out since the surprise success of Squid Game: The Challenge, which proved that pairing a beloved fictional world with real contestants and real stakes could translate into a genuine ratings hit rather than a gimmick. Beast Games followed with an even bigger scale and prize pool, and Wonka’s The Golden Ticket continues that trend by applying the same formula to one of the most recognizable pieces of intellectual property Netflix owns outright, following its 2021 acquisition of the Roald Dahl Story Company.

That acquisition has already produced Matilda the Musical and the Oscar-winning Wes Anderson short The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar, with an animated film, Charlie Versus the Chocolate Factory, executive produced by Taika Waititi, due to arrive in 2027. Wonka’s The Golden Ticket represents Netflix’s first attempt to turn Dahl’s most famous story into unscripted, competition-format programming rather than another straight adaptation — a bet that the emotional pull of watching real families and friend pairs compete inside a recognizable fictional world will resonate the way it did with Squid Game: The Challenge’s format.

How Much Is the Prize, Exactly?

Netflix has been deliberately vague about the exact dollar figure contestants are competing for, consistently describing it only as a “life-changing prize” in official materials. The show’s trailer teases the reward as a “lifetime supply of money,” a clear echo of Charlie Bucket’s lifetime supply of chocolate from the original story, but without confirming a specific number. Given comparable Netflix competition formats — Squid Game: The Challenge awarded a $4.56 million grand prize, while Beast Games offered a headline-grabbing $5 million — it’s reasonable to expect Wonka’s The Golden Ticket’s prize to land in a similar multi-million-dollar range, though Netflix has not confirmed this publicly ahead of the premiere.

Should You Watch With Kids?

Wonka’s The Golden Ticket carries a TV-PG rating, which puts it in a different category from most of Netflix’s higher-stakes competition formats. Given its source material — a children’s book and a family film — and its family-friendly pairing structure (multiple parent-child and grandparent-grandchild teams among the contestants), the series appears designed as one of Netflix’s more broadly watchable reality competitions, closer in spirit to a family game show than the psychologically intense elimination formats the streamer has become known for elsewhere in the genre.

A Quick Guide: How to Watch Both Titles This Week

Wonka’s The Golden Ticket — stream new episodes weekly starting September 23 on Netflix, with the two-part finale landing September 30. No additional rental or purchase required with an active Netflix subscription.
Top Gun: Maverick — now streaming as part of Netflix’s core library in markets where it has arrived this September, with no separate rental fee. If it’s not yet listed in your region’s catalog, it remains available to rent or purchase digitally through services like Apple TV, Amazon, and Google Play.

Both titles are included with a standard Netflix subscription in supported regions, making this one of the more varied single weeks on the platform’s 2026 release calendar — a big-budget theatrical rewatch on one end, and a brand-new unscripted format on the other, giving subscribers a genuine choice between nostalgia and something entirely new to talk about.
