What Is the iPhone Duo?
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first book-style folding smartphone. Closed, it behaves like a compact 5.4-inch iPhone. Opened, it reveals a larger 7.6-inch inner display that Apple says offers 50 percent more screen area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, making it the biggest screen ever fitted to an iPhone. Apple has framed the Duo not as a niche experiment but as, in the words of new CEO John Ternus, the most significant change to the iPhone’s design since the original 2007 model.
Latest Update: What Apple Confirmed on September 9
At the keynote, Apple confirmed the iPhone Duo alongside the standard iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. This was also the first keynote led by John Ternus, who took over as Apple CEO on September 1, 2026, after previously heading hardware engineering. Unlike the iPhone 18 Pro line, the Duo will not ship in September. Apple confirmed pre-orders begin October 16 at 5am Pacific / 1pm UK time, with the phone reaching stores on October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, and a further 28 markets following on October 30.
Why Is the iPhone Duo Trending?
The iPhone Duo is trending globally because it ends nearly a decade of rumors about a folding iPhone, arrives from a newly appointed CEO’s first keynote, and lands seven years to the day after Samsung shipped the original Galaxy Fold in September 2019. Search interest has spiked sharply across India, the United States, and Pakistan within hours of the announcement, driven by people comparing it to existing foldables, checking import pricing, and looking for hands-on impressions from the keynote.
Important Facts About the iPhone Duo
- Displays: A 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR folding display with a nano-texture matte finish designed to cut glare and reduce the visible crease, plus a 5.4-inch outer display that covers more than 90 percent of the screen area of a standard iPhone 18 Pro.
- Chip: The A20 Pro, the same chip used in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, built on a 2-nanometer process with a 6-core CPU and 7-core GPU, paired with a custom vapor chamber for cooling.
- Security: Touch ID built into the side button, replacing Face ID on this model.
- Build: A grade 5 titanium frame with a titanium-and-aluminum hinge, rated IP68 for dust and water resistance.
- Cameras: Dual 48MP rear cameras and two front-facing cameras, with Duo-specific features such as Duo Preview, Smart Take, Kid Cue, and Duo FaceTime that make use of the outer screen.
- Battery: A dual-cell battery system, one cell per half of the phone, rated for up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display and 31 hours on the inner display.
- Software: Ships with iOS 27, which adds Split View multitasking, a reworked StandBy mode, and layouts that adapt between the two screens. Apple Pencil (USB-C) support is planned later in 2026.

iPhone Duo Price and Storage Options
| Storage | Price (US) |
|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,999 |

| 1TB | Higher tier (exact figure to be confirmed on Apple’s store page) |

For comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, which puts the Duo’s entry price at roughly double that of Apple’s existing flagship.
How the iPhone Duo Compares to the iPhone 18 Pro Max
The iPhone Duo uses the identical A20 Pro chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro Max, so raw processing power is similar, though Apple notes that sustained performance on the Duo is slightly lower because cooling a folding body is more difficult than cooling a single slab of aluminum and glass. The Duo’s main advantage is screen real estate: its inner display is 50 percent larger than the Pro Max screen, which matters most for multitasking, reading, and watching video. The trade-off is weight and thickness. At 254 grams, the Duo is heavier than the Pro Max, and it lacks Face ID, ProRes video, and Apple Log recording, all of which remain exclusive to the non-folding Pro models for now.
What Does This Mean for Buyers?
For most people, the iPhone Duo is not a replacement for a standard iPhone. Its price, weight, and first-generation hinge technology make it a premium option aimed at early adopters and people who specifically want a larger inner screen for productivity or media. Anyone comparing it to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line should weigh the higher price against Apple’s software integration, Duo-specific camera features, and the titanium build. Buyers on a budget, or anyone who simply wants the newest standard iPhone, will likely find better value in the iPhone 18 or iPhone 18 Pro.
What Happens Next?
Pre-orders open on October 16, 2026, and reviewers will publish full hands-on tests in the days before the October 23 release. Watch for real-world battery benchmarks, durability and crease reports after extended use, and carrier-specific deals, since availability through mobile carriers will vary by country. Apple has also indicated that Apple Pencil (USB-C) support for the Duo is coming later in 2026, which is worth waiting for if stylus support is a priority.
