At Google Marketing Live 2026, Google confirmed that Gemini is no longer just a feature bolted onto search and ads, it is becoming the core engine connecting Google Search, YouTube, Merchant Center, Analytics, and Google Ads into one AI-driven advertising system. For digital marketers, the shift means campaigns are moving from keyword-and-click optimization toward conversational, AI Mode-friendly experiences where success depends on how well a brand’s signals, feeds, and content help Gemini understand and recommend it.

What Was Announced at Google Marketing Live 2026
Google Marketing Live, the company’s annual advertiser-focused event, ran its global kickoff in Mountain View on May 20, 2026, followed by a European edition on May 21. The headline message was that Gemini is becoming the operating system behind Google’s advertising, commerce, and measurement ecosystem, rather than a standalone feature. Google introduced several new Gemini-powered ad formats designed specifically for AI Mode and conversational search experiences, alongside continued testing of ads inside AI Mode itself in the US.
Key New Tools for Advertisers
- Ask Advisor: An AI assistant designed to help advertisers with campaign strategy and creative decisions.
- Asset Studio: A tool for AI-assisted creative production across ad formats.
- Expanded Demand Gen: Broader tools for cross-channel distribution of ad creative.
- Conversational Discovery Ads: New ad formats built for AI-driven, conversational discovery experiences, each including an independent AI-generated explanation using Gemini models to evaluate product or service information.
Why Search Itself Is Changing
The bigger strategic message from Google Marketing Live 2026 is that Search is no longer primarily a place for links. It is becoming what Google frames as an AI-powered decision-making space, where users increasingly ask full questions about which option best fits their needs rather than typing narrow keyword queries. This connects directly to the parallel shift shown at Google I/O 2026, where Gemini-powered AI Mode expanded from a search feature into a broader agentic system capable of research, organization, recommendations, and in some cases completing tasks on a user’s behalf.
What This Means for SEO and Content Strategy
As AI systems increasingly answer queries directly, competition is shifting from “who ranks first” to “who gets summarized or recommended” by AI systems as relevant, trustworthy, and useful. This puts generative engine optimization, consistent entity presence across the web, and clear, well-structured content in focus alongside classic SEO practices. For publishers and marketers, this means the same content decisions, clear direct answers, well-defined entities, credible sourcing, now serve both traditional Google rankings and visibility inside AI Mode and other AI-generated answers.
What This Means for Google Ads Campaigns
Google Ads is moving toward a model where advertisers define business outcomes and goals, while automation increasingly handles the operational work of bidding strategies, asset combinations, and parts of audience targeting. In practice, this means marketers are expected to focus more on supplying high-quality signals, creative assets, product feeds, and clear goals, and less on manually adjusting individual bids or audience segments, since Gemini-powered systems are designed to handle much of that optimization directly.
What This Means for Small and Local Businesses
Smaller advertisers, who often lack dedicated marketing teams, stand to benefit most from tools like Ask Advisor and Asset Studio, since these are designed to compress work that previously required specialist skills, such as audience research or multi-format creative production, into a guided, conversational workflow. For a local business running its own Google Ads account, this shift could lower the skill barrier to running competitive campaigns, though it also means more of the strategic decision-making is happening inside Googleu2019s AI systems rather than in the advertiseru2019s own hands, which raises questions about transparency and control that marketers are still working through.
Balancing Automation With Brand Control
As more of the campaign optimization process becomes automated, marketers are increasingly focused on the inputs they can still directly control: brand guidelines, product feed accuracy, first-party data quality, and the underlying content that AI systems draw on to generate ad creative and summaries. Agencies and in-house teams that invest early in cleaning up these foundational assets are likely to see better results from Gemini-powered automation than those that treat AI tools as a plug-and-play replacement for strategic oversight. Teams that skip this groundwork often find automated campaigns underperform, not because the AI tools are weak, but because the signals feeding them are incomplete.
What Happens Next?
Expect continued expansion of Gemini-powered ad formats beyond their current US testing in AI Mode, along with deeper integration between organic content strategy and paid advertising as both increasingly depend on the same underlying AI systems for visibility. Marketers should watch for further product announcements refining Ask Advisor, Asset Studio, and Demand Gen as Google continues rolling out this unified, AI-driven advertising ecosystem through the rest of 2026.
