His wife of more than three decades, Alma Viator, announced his death in a Facebook post, writing, “I lost the love of my life today. Ben passed from a massive heart attack.” She said he was resting in his favorite chair, waiting for the Atlanta Braves game to start, when he suffered the fatal cardiac arrest. Who Was Ben Jones?
Jones rose to national fame as Cooter Davenport, the trusty mechanic and “honorary Duke” sidekick to cousins Bo and Luke Duke, in the CBS action comedy “The Dukes of Hazzard,” which ran from 1979 to 1985. The show, known for its car chases and small-town charm, ranked among the top 10 most-watched television programs in the US during its first three seasons, according to Nielsen Media Research. Jones appeared in all seven seasons and later reprised the role in the 1997 TV movie “The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion!” and the 2000 special “The Dukes of Hazzard: Hazzard in Hollywood.” The character Cooter, a mischievous but law-averse mechanic, remained one of the show’s most beloved figures with fans.
From Hollywood to Congress
After “The Dukes of Hazzard” ended its run, Jones shifted into politics. He was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1988, representing Georgia’s 4th congressional district as a Democrat from January 1989 to January 1993. During his time in Congress, he served as a Democratic whip and sat on the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs and the Committee on Public Works and Transportation. Beyond his time in office, Jones was active in the Screen Actors Guild and led the Georgia Film Commission, work that connected his entertainment career with his home state’s film industry.
Tributes From Co-Stars and Friends
News of Jones’s death prompted tributes from his “Dukes of Hazzard” co-stars. Tom Wopat, who played Luke Duke, shared a photo of the two of them arm-in-arm on stage, writing, “The Dukes of Hazzard lost another integral part of their cast today. Ben Jones was a fine friend and a fierce advocate of all the best things we can offer in the entertainment business. He will be sorely missed.” Another longtime friend recalled knowing Jones for more than 45 years, saying he “had a heart as big as Texas.”
Life Beyond Cooter
Jones’s acting career extended well beyond his signature role. Before “The Dukes of Hazzard,” he worked steadily in theater, film, and television, building the kind of varied character-actor resume common to performers who broke through in the 1970s. After his time in Congress ended in 1993, he stayed connected to the character that made him famous, opening a chain of “Cooter’s Place” museum and souvenir shops celebrating the show, including locations in Virginia and Tennessee, which became gathering spots for Dukes of Hazzard fans and a place where Jones continued to perform with his Cooter’s Garage Band well into his eighties.
A Career That Crossed Entertainment and Politics
Jones’s path from a beloved TV sidekick to a sitting member of Congress remains unusual even by Hollywood standards. While several actors have run for office over the decades, few have combined a recurring, high-profile television role with a multi-term stint in the US House of Representatives the way Jones did. His work on the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs reflected a personal commitment to veterans’ issues that colleagues and constituents frequently cited during his time in office, and his leadership of the Georgia Film Commission after his acting fame helped shape the state’s relationship with the film and television industry in the years that followed.
What This Means for Fans of the Show
Jones’s death continues a difficult stretch for fans of “The Dukes of Hazzard,” as several members of the show’s original cast have passed away in recent years. His passing is a reminder of the show’s lasting cultural footprint nearly half a century after it first aired, and of Jones’s unusual path from a beloved TV character to elected office, a combination few actors of his era matched.
Remembering the Real Ben Jones
Friends and colleagues described Jones as a warm, larger-than-life presence whose enthusiasm for storytelling, music, and Southern history stayed constant across his careers in acting and public service. He remained a familiar face at fan conventions and Dukes of Hazzard reunion events for decades after the show ended, often performing live music and swapping stories with fans who grew up watching Cooter Davenport on Friday nights. His decades of public appearances helped keep interest in the show alive for new generations discovering it through reruns and streaming. His wife’s tribute captured that spirit, describing a man who had “the most amazing rich full life” and “loved and was loved by so many.”
