Goal-by-Goal Breakdown
24′ — Jonathan David opens the scoring
Atlético broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark through summer signing Jonathan David, who struck to make it 1-0. The goal continued the Canadian forward’s strong start to life in Madrid and set the tone for a first half in which the hosts dominated possession and territory.
54′ — Kang-In Lee doubles the lead
Nine minutes into the second half, Kang-In Lee got on the scoresheet himself, converting an assist from David to make it 2-0. The South Korean international was one of Atlético’s standout performers on the night, finishing the match with a team-high 9.0 rating.
68′ — Robin Le Normand makes it three
Center-back Robin Le Normand joined the scoring party in the 68th minute, heading home to put Atlético 3-0 ahead and effectively end the contest as a competitive fixture. Le Normand’s goal capped an excellent all-around defensive and attacking performance, reflected in his 8.4 match rating.
85′ — Álex Baena completes the rout
With five minutes remaining, substitute-turned-creator Johnny Cardoso teed up Álex Baena, who slotted home Atlético’s fourth to put the finishing touch on a dominant display. Baena finished the match with an 8.7 rating, one of the highest on the pitch.
First Half: Atlético Control Without Fully Punishing It
Despite the eventual scoreline, the first half was closer on the balance of chances than the final number might suggest. Atlético dominated possession from the opening whistle, patiently working the ball through midfield via Koke and Johnny Cardoso, but Osasuna’s compact 5-4-1 initially did its job, absorbing pressure and limiting clear-cut opportunities.
The breakthrough came in the 24th minute when Jonathan David found space to finish and open the scoring, capping a spell of sustained pressure. Atlético continued to probe for a second before the break but were unable to add to their lead, going in at half-time with a narrow 1-0 advantage that, statistically, undersold their dominance — they had already racked up a significant share of the eventual 27 total shots and 3.99 xG by that point.
Second Half: The Floodgates Open
Osasuna’s resistance began to crack almost immediately after the restart. Just nine minutes into the second half, Kang-In Lee doubled Atlético’s advantage, finishing off a David assist to make it 2-0 in the 54th minute — the same minute Ademola Lookman picked up a caution at the other end of the pitch.
From there, the match increasingly took on the feel of a training exercise for the hosts. Robin Le Normand’s headed goal in the 68th minute — arriving in the same passage of play that saw Simeone make a triple substitution, bringing on Marc Pubill, Giuliano Simeone, and Arnau Ortiz simultaneously — put the result beyond any realistic doubt. Osasuna’s own changes, introducing Ante Budimir, Rubén Garcia, and later Jon Moncayola and Romain Del Castillo, failed to generate any sustained attacking response.
The scoring was rounded off in the 85th minute when substitute Johnny Cardoso, who had come on to add fresh legs in midfield, teed up Álex Baena for Atlético’s fourth. It was a fitting way to close out a match in which the hosts had been in control of virtually every phase of play.
Jonathan David’s Growing Impact
Wednesday’s performance continued a strong start to life in Madrid for Jonathan David, who arrived at Atlético over the summer and has quickly established himself as a key attacking option. His goal against Osasuna followed his involvement in all three goals in the previous 3-0 win over Real Sociedad, where he scored his first goal for the club. Across his opening months in LaLiga, David has shown the kind of movement and finishing instinct that made him one of the most sought-after forwards in European football before his move — and his combination play with Kang-In Lee, culminating in the assist for Atlético’s second goal here, hints at a growing understanding between the pair going forward.
Kang-In Lee’s Standout Night
If Jonathan David provided the early breakthrough, it was Kang-In Lee who stole the show. His 9.0 match rating was the highest of any player on the pitch, built on a combination of his own goal, an eye for the incisive pass, and relentless movement between the lines that Osasuna’s defense simply couldn’t track for large stretches of the second half. The South Korean international has increasingly become one of Simeone’s most trusted attacking outlets, and performances like this one will only add to the growing sense that he’s approaching the peak of his early career.
Match Statistics: A One-Sided Affair
The underlying numbers tell the story of just how comprehensively Atlético Madrid controlled this fixture from start to finish:
- Possession: Atlético Madrid 68% — Osasuna 32%
- Expected goals (xG): Atlético Madrid 3.99 — Osasuna 0.48
- Total shots: Atlético Madrid 27 — Osasuna 3
- Touches in the opposition box: Atlético Madrid 46 — Osasuna 9
An xG differential of nearly 3.5 goals in Atlético’s favor, combined with a 27-3 advantage in shots, makes this one of the most lopsided performances of the young 2026-27 LaLiga season. Osasuna managed just three shots across the full 90 minutes and barely threatened Jan Oblak’s goal.
Player Ratings: Standout Performers
Atlético Madrid’s average team rating for the match was 7.5, comfortably ahead of Osasuna’s 5.9. Individually, several Atlético players had nights to remember:
- Kang-In Lee (9.0) — The night’s top performer, involved in multiple goals and a constant threat down the flank.
- Jonathan David (8.8) — Opened the scoring and set up the second goal before being substituted in the 68th minute.
- Álex Baena (8.7) — Capped the win with the fourth goal and combined well throughout the match.
- Robin Le Normand (8.4) — Scored Atlético’s third and was assured defensively all night.
- Johnny Cardoso (8.4) — Provided the assist for the fourth goal in an impressive display in midfield.
- Marcos Llorente (8.1) — Solid throughout at right-back.
For Osasuna, the highest-rated player was goalkeeper Aitor Fernández (6.8), who limited the damage against a barrage of Atlético attacks.
Team News and Lineups
Diego Simeone set his side up in a 4-4-2 formation: Jan Oblak in goal, behind a back four of Marcos Llorente, Cristian Romero, Robin Le Normand, and Alejandro Grimaldo. In midfield, Kang-In Lee, Koke, Johnny Cardoso, and Álex Baena supported a front two of Jonathan David and Ademola Lookman.
Atlético were without three key attacking options through injury: Julián Álvarez, Alexander Sørloth, and Pablo Barrios. Even so, the depth on show — with David, Lookman, and Baena leading the line — proved more than enough against Osasuna’s resistance.
Osasuna boss Luis Miguel Ramis set up in a 5-4-1 shape: Aitor Fernández in goal, a back five of Rockson Yeboah, Flavien Boyomo, Unai Santos, Iñigo Arguibide, and Abel Bretones, with Jonathan Dubasin, Asier Osambela, Lucas Torró, and Raúl Moro in midfield behind lone striker Raúl García. Osasuna were missing Jorge Herrando, Valentin Rosier, Aimar Oroz, and Moi Gómez through injury, and the visitors’ threadbare attacking options showed in a performance that managed only three shots all night.
Substitutions
Atlético made five changes across the match: Cristian Romero was replaced by Marc Pubill (68′), Jonathan David made way for Giuliano Simeone (68′), Ademola Lookman was replaced by Arnau Ortiz (68′), Alejandro Grimaldo gave way to Dávid Hancko (85′), and Johnny Cardoso was replaced by Morten Hjulmand (86′), picking up a late yellow card moments after coming on for a foul by Rubén García on the Osasuna side.
Osasuna also made a raft of changes as they searched for a way back into the game: Raúl García was replaced by Ante Budimir (60′), Raúl Moro made way for Rubén Garcia (60′), Jonathan Dubasin was replaced by Enrique Barja (59′), Iñigo Arguibide gave way to Jon Moncayola (71′), and Asier Osambela was substituted for Romain Del Castillo (75′) — but none of the changes were able to stem the tide.
What This Result Means for Atlético Madrid
This was a statement performance from Atlético Madrid, who bounced back from a difficult run of results — including a 0-3 defeat to Athletic Club and a 1-2 Champions League loss to Liverpool — with back-to-back league wins, following their 3-0 victory over Real Sociedad the previous round.
The scale of the win, and the underlying numbers (68% possession, nearly 4.0 xG), suggest Simeone’s side are finding their attacking rhythm despite missing three first-choice attacking options to injury. With Julián Álvarez expected back in late September, Atlético’s attacking depth will only improve heading into a busy autumn schedule that includes both LaLiga and Champions League fixtures.
What This Result Means for Osasuna
For Osasuna, this was a third straight defeat, following losses to Deportivo Alavés (5-2) and Espanyol (0-2) in their previous two outings. The visitors managed just three shots and a 0.48 xG across the full match — a performance that will raise serious concerns for head coach Luis Miguel Ramis heading into the international break.
Osasuna’s issues appear to run deeper than one bad night: their attacking output across their last five league matches has been limited, averaging just one goal scored per game, while their defense has also struggled, conceding at a rate of 1.6 goals per match coming into this fixture. A day at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano — where the visitors have now lost nine of their last 10 trips — did little to change that narrative.
Head-to-Head History
Atlético Madrid extended their dominance in this fixture, which now stands at 21 wins for Atlético, 3 for Osasuna, and 1 draw across their last meetings at this level. Atlético have won 15 of their last 17 encounters with Osasuna, continuing a pattern of near-total supremacy in this particular matchup over the past several seasons.
The two sides last met in May 2026, when Atlético won 2-1 away at El Sadar in Pamplona — meaning Wednesday’s 4-0 result was an even more emphatic version of that same trend continuing.
LaLiga Round 6: The Bigger Picture
Going into Round 6, Atlético Madrid sat eighth in the table with seven points from four matches, while Osasuna were 11th with seven points from five matches. Wednesday’s result should see Atlético climb the table significantly, given the margin of victory and the goal-difference boost that comes with a 4-0 scoreline, while Osasuna will likely slip further down as their third consecutive loss compounds an already difficult start to the season.
Elsewhere in LaLiga’s Round 6 schedule, other fixtures across the matchday included Barcelona’s home game against Racing Santander, Real Madrid traveling to Elche, and Sevilla hosting Barcelona — part of a full slate of matches that shaped the early-season table alongside this result.
Tactical Breakdown: How Atlético Dismantled Osasuna
Diego Simeone’s 4-4-2 gave Atlético a numerical platform in midfield that Osasuna’s 5-4-1 struggled to cope with once the hosts settled into possession. With Koke and Johnny Cardoso controlling the tempo through the center of the park, Atlético were able to rotate the ball from side to side and stretch Osasuna’s back five, opening gaps for Kang-In Lee and Álex Baena to exploit in half-spaces between the visitors’ defensive and midfield lines.
Osasuna’s five-at-the-back setup is normally designed to compress space and deny central passing lanes, but it left them light going forward, with Raúl García isolated as a lone striker against a well-organized Atlético back line. That imbalance shows up clearly in the touches-in-box numbers: Atlético had 46 touches inside Osasuna’s penalty area compared to just 9 for the visitors in Atlético’s box — a ratio that made the eventual scoreline feel almost inevitable by half-time, even though the match was only 1-0 at the break.
The introduction of fresh legs in the second half — Giuliano Simeone, Arnau Ortiz, and Marc Pubill among them — allowed Atlético to maintain their attacking intensity even as starters like Jonathan David and Ademola Lookman were withdrawn, a sign of squad depth that Simeone will be pleased to see given Atlético’s congested fixture list this autumn.
Cards, Fouls, and Discipline
It was a relatively low-key night for the officials by LaLiga standards. Ademola Lookman picked up a yellow card in the 54th minute for Atlético, while Osasuna’s Rubén García was cautioned late on, in the 86th minute, shortly after coming off the bench. Referee Francisco José Hernández Maeso, whose average of 3.7 yellow cards and 23.9 fouls per match both run below the LaLiga norm, kept a relatively light touch throughout what was, in truth, a fairly one-sided and low-intensity contest once Atlético’s third goal went in.
The Venue: Riyadh Air Metropolitano
Atlético Madrid’s home ground — officially the Riyadh Air Metropolitano under its current sponsorship naming rights — hosted a crowd of 60,869, filling roughly 86% of its 70,460 capacity on a mild late-summer evening with the temperature at 23°C and the pitch in good condition. The stadium, located on the eastern edge of Madrid, has been Atlético’s home since 2017 and has increasingly become one of the most intimidating venues in Spanish football for visiting teams, reflected in Osasuna’s poor recent record there — losing nine of their last ten visits.
Season Context: Where Both Clubs Stand
This result arrives at an important early-season juncture for both clubs. Atlético Madrid reached the Champions League semi-finals last season but also suffered late-season disappointments, losing the Copa del Rey final and surrendering third place in LaLiga to Villarreal on the final day. That near-miss campaign has added extra motivation to this season’s squad, and performances like Wednesday’s 4-0 win suggest Simeone’s rebuilt attacking options — headlined by summer signing Jonathan David — are starting to click.
Osasuna, by contrast, endured a difficult second half of last season, narrowly avoiding relegation and finishing 17th, level on points with 18th-placed Mallorca before survival was confirmed on additional criteria. Their start to 2026-27 had shown some promise, including wins over Celta Vigo and Getafe, but back-to-back-to-back defeats against Deportivo Alavés, Espanyol, and now Atlético Madrid have erased much of that early optimism heading into the international break.
Betting Market Context
Pre-match betting markets had strongly favored the hosts, with Atlético Madrid priced as clear favorites at odds implying roughly a 67-69% win probability, compared to around 20% for the draw and 11-15% for an Osasuna win. Several pre-match previews had also flagged the “over 2.5 goals” market as a likely outcome given Atlético’s home scoring rate and Osasuna’s defensive struggles — a prediction that proved accurate almost twice over by full time.
Key Terms for New Football Fans
- xG (Expected Goals): A statistic estimating the likelihood of a shot resulting in a goal based on factors like position, angle, and defensive pressure. A team significantly outperforming or underperforming its xG total can indicate finishing quality (or luck) on the night.
- Touches in the box: How many times a team’s players touched the ball inside the opposition’s penalty area — a good proxy for sustained attacking pressure.
- Man of the match rating: A composite performance score (often out of 10) combining a player’s statistical contributions — passes, tackles, shots, goals, and more — into a single number for easy comparison.
- Formation shorthand (e.g. 4-4-2, 5-4-1): Describes how a team lines up outside of the goalkeeper, from defense to attack. A 5-4-1, like Osasuna used here, prioritizes defensive solidity at the cost of attacking numbers.
Looking Ahead
With the international break now approaching, both squads will see a number of players depart for national team duty before LaLiga action resumes. For Atlético, the priority will be building on this result and integrating returning players like Julián Álvarez, expected back from injury in late September, into a front line that already looks sharp. For Osasuna, head coach Luis Miguel Ramis faces a more urgent challenge: finding a response before a third consecutive defeat becomes a longer slide down the table.

Comparing the Two Sides: Season Snapshot
Heading into this fixture, the underlying season numbers already hinted at a gap in class between the two sides, and Wednesday’s result only widened it. Atlético had been averaging 7 goals scored across their opening four league matches against 6 conceded — a defense allowing 1.5 goals per game, but one backed by enough attacking firepower to remain competitive. Osasuna, by contrast, had scored just 5 goals across 5 matches while conceding 8, a return of exactly one goal scored per game against a defense leaking 1.6 per match — numbers that, in hindsight, look almost generous compared to how one-sided Wednesday’s match actually played out.
That gap showed up everywhere in this match: in the 68-32% possession split, the 27-3 gulf in shots, and especially in the 3.99-0.48 expected goals differential — one of the most lopsided single-match xG gaps recorded in LaLiga so far this season.
Why This Match Was Trending
Search interest in “atlético vs osasuna” spiked around kickoff and again as the final whistle approached, a pattern typical of LaLiga fixtures involving one of Spain’s traditional “big clubs.” With Atlético fielding a mix of established internationals (Jan Oblak, Koke, Marcos Llorente) and high-profile summer arrivals (Jonathan David), interest in how the rebuilt squad would perform against a mid-table opponent made this a closely watched fixture even before a ball was kicked — interest that a 4-0 scoreline, four different goalscorers, and a near-perfect underlying performance only amplified once the final whistle blew.
Beyond the immediate result, fixtures like this one also tend to draw fantasy football and betting audiences searching for post-match analysis — checking whether players they own performed well, whether the “over 2.5 goals” market landed (it did, comfortably), and how the result shifts each club’s underlying season metrics ahead of the next round of matches. That combination of live-score checkers, fantasy managers, and football fans searching for a quick recap is typically what drives search interest around a match title like “atlético vs osasuna” well past the final whistle and into the following day.
Historical Meetings Worth Remembering
Wednesday’s rout continues a long history of one-sided Atlético Madrid wins over Osasuna, though rarely has the gap between the two sides been this stark in a single match. Their first-ever meeting dates back to December 11, 1932, when — in one of the few outliers in this fixture’s history — Osasuna actually won 5-1 away at Atlético. Since then, however, the pendulum has swung decisively in Atlético’s favor, particularly over the past decade, with the Madrid side winning the vast majority of encounters, including a memorable 4-2 victory in a bad-tempered clash a few seasons ago that saw both teams reduced to ten men.
For longtime followers of this fixture, Wednesday’s 4-0 scoreline fits a familiar pattern: Osasuna’s best results against Atlético tend to come in tightly contested, low-scoring affairs, while any match that opens up tends to heavily favor the technically superior Madrid side — exactly what played out here once Atlético’s second goal went in early in the second half.
The Bottom Line
Atlético Madrid’s 4-0 win over Osasuna was as convincing as the scoreline suggests — a match dominated from start to finish, with four different goalscorers, near-total control of possession, and an xG gap of almost 3.5 goals. For Simeone’s side, it’s a timely response after a rocky patch of results. For Osasuna, it’s a third straight loss that will demand urgent answers before their next fixture. With the international break now offering both squads a brief pause to regroup, the coming weeks will show whether this result marks the beginning of sustained momentum for Atlético Madrid or simply a favorable matchup against a struggling opponent — and whether Osasuna can arrest a slide that has now cost them three consecutive league matches. Either way, this was a Wednesday night in Madrid that will be remembered as one of the season’s most emphatic results — and a reminder, for anyone still doubting Atlético’s attacking rebuild, of exactly what this squad is capable of on its day.
