How Shelton Reached the Final
Ben Shelton’s run to the final included one of the most dramatic wins of his career: a five-set upset of two-time champion and defending finalist Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals that finished at 3:30 a.m. ET, the latest finish in US Open history. In the semifinal against Frances Tiafoe on September 11, Shelton dropped the first set 4-6 after making 14 unforced errors, then composed himself to win 14 of the next 20 games, closing it out 6-3, 6-3, 7-5. Shelton converted five of his 11 break points to Tiafoe’s two of seven, and hit 47 winners to Tiafoe’s 27.
A Historic Semifinal
The Shelton-Tiafoe match was the first Grand Slam semifinal ever to feature two Black American men, and the winner was guaranteed to become the first Black American man to reach the US Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972. Shelton dedicated the win to his grandmother, who his father and coach Bryan Shelton lost earlier this year, saying there is “no Ben Shelton” without her. Tiafoe, who has now lost in three US Open semifinals, congratulated Shelton at the net before the final point had fully settled.
How Zverev Reached the Final
Top seed Alexander Zverev, this year’s French Open champion, reached his third consecutive Grand Slam final by beating Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (6) earlier on the same day as the Shelton-Tiafoe semifinal, surviving two tiebreaks he was trailing in. Zverev is the only man to reach the quarterfinals of all four majors in 2026, and reaching this final also guarantees him the world No. 2 ranking. He has never won the US Open, having lost the 2020 final to Dominic Thiem after leading two sets to love.
Zverev vs Shelton: What the History Says
Zverev has won all five of his previous meetings with Shelton, most recently at the 2025 ATP Finals, where Shelton won only 10 of 54 return points and Zverev won 16 of 21 points on Shelton’s second serve. However, Shelton’s form through this tournament, including his win over Alcaraz and his comeback against Tiafoe, suggests a more complete player than the one Zverev has beaten in the past. Zverev has acknowledged the danger, saying before the final, “Hopefully I cannot make the American Dream come true on Sunday.”
What Is at Stake
For Shelton, a win would end a 23-year wait for an American man to win a Grand Slam singles title, the last being Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open, and would make him the first Black American man to win the tournament since Arthur Ashe in 1972. For Zverev, a win would deliver his second Grand Slam title of the year after his French Open triumph and finally secure the US Open trophy that eluded him in the 2020 final. Shelton is already guaranteed to rise to a career-high No. 4 in the world ranking regardless of the final’s outcome.
What a Shelton Win Would Mean for American Tennis
American men’s tennis has spent more than two decades searching for a genuine Grand Slam contender following Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open title. Shelton, at just 22, has emerged this tournament as the most credible threat that drought has seen in years, having beaten both a two-time defending finalist in Alcaraz and a fellow top-15 American in Tiafoe on his way to the final. A win over Zverev would not just end the individual drought, it would likely reshape expectations for American men’s tennis heading into 2027, with Shelton positioned as the face of a new generation alongside players like Michelsen and Blockx who also made deep runs this tournament.
Where the Match Fits in the Broader 2026 Season
This final caps a menu2019s season that opened without a clear favorite after defending world No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdrew from the US Open with a knee injury and Carlos Alcaraz entered off a lengthy layoff from a wrist injury. Zverev capitalized on that uncertainty by winning the French Open and reaching the Wimbledon final earlier in the year, and a US Open title would give him three major finals and a Grand Slam title in the same season for the first time in his career, a milestone that would place him firmly among the sportu2019s dominant players heading into 2027.
What Happens Next?
The men’s final is scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2026, at Arthur Ashe Stadium. A Shelton win would be one of the biggest storylines in recent US tennis history, while a Zverev win would cement his status as the most consistent Grand Slam performer of the 2026 season, having now reached three straight major finals.
