Edinburgh does not get the credit it deserves as a food city. Most people think of haggis, a dram of whisky, and maybe fish and chips near the Royal Mile. But the reality is something far more exciting. The Scottish capital is home to seven Michelin-starred restaurants, a thriving dining neighbourhood in Leith, and a food culture that punches well above its weight for a city of its size.
Whether you are visiting for the first time or you live here and are looking for somewhere genuinely worth the reservation, this guide covers ten restaurants that stand out in 2026 for all the right reasons.
1. Moss – The Best Restaurant in Edinburgh Right Now
Cuisine: Scottish Farm to Table
Price Range: £££
Address: Stockbridge, Edinburgh
Best Dish: Tour of Scotland tasting menu
Moss has been named the best restaurant in Edinburgh in 2026 by Time Out, and after hearing what diners have to say about it, that title feels completely deserved. Owned by chef Henry Dobson who trained at the three-Michelin-starred Noma in Copenhagen, Moss opened in Edinburgh’s Stockbridge neighbourhood last year and has been pulling in serious food lovers ever since.
The concept is straightforward but beautifully executed. Everything on the menu comes from Scottish producers, and the dishes change constantly to reflect what is in season. One visit you might find tempura oyster from the Western Isles, wild forest boar from the Highlands, or venison from Peebles. The next time you come, the menu will have shifted entirely.
The Tour of Scotland menu at £85 per head gives you the full experience and is worth every penny. The food is described by reviewers as nothing short of art on a plate. If you are only going to splash out on one restaurant in Edinburgh this year, make it this one.
2. Timberyard – Michelin Green Star and Worth Every Penny
Cuisine: Modern Scottish
Price Range: £££
Address: 10 Lady Lawson Street, Edinburgh EH3 9DS
Best Dish: Seasonal tasting menu with local snacks
Timberyard is set inside a converted 19th century warehouse behind Edinburgh Castle, and the moment you walk in you understand that this is not just a restaurant it is a proper dining experience. The Radford family run it as a committed family business, working closely with local growers, breeders, producers, and foragers to build a menu that is entirely rooted in what Scotland’s landscape produces best.
In 2025, Timberyard earned a Michelin Green Star for its sustainable approach to food. That is on top of its existing recognition in the guide and speaks to how seriously this kitchen takes its responsibilities alongside its cooking. The tasting menu is the way to go here, and the snacks that arrive at the beginning of the meal alone are worth the visit. If budget is a concern, the lunch menu at £80 per person is the more accessible way in.
3. The Witchery by the Castle – Edinburgh’s Most Atmospheric Restaurant
Cuisine: Scottish
Price Range: £££
Address: Castlehill, Royal Mile, Edinburgh EH1 2NF
Best Dish: Scottish lobster and seasonal game
There is nowhere in Edinburgh quite like The Witchery. Tucked at the foot of Edinburgh Castle with its bright red doors, this restaurant has been an institution in the city for decades. The interior is something you genuinely have to see Gothic candlelit rooms, oak panelling, rich velvet, and an atmosphere so theatrical it feels like dining inside a story.
But the setting is not a distraction from the food the kitchen earns its place independently. Expect beautifully cooked Scottish lobster, seasonal game, and carefully sourced produce presented with real confidence. The Witchery is the kind of restaurant that visitors put on their bucket list and locals save for the most special of occasions. Book well ahead it fills up consistently throughout the year.
4. AVERY – A Michelin-Starred San Franciscan in Edinburgh
Cuisine: Californian with Scottish Influences
Price Range: ££££
Address: Easter Road, Edinburgh EH6 8LH
Best Dish: 12-course tasting menu with Scottish produce
The story behind AVERY is one of those that makes you smile. American chef Rodney Wages visited Edinburgh on holiday, fell in love with the city, and eventually moved his entire family here bringing his acclaimed San Francisco restaurant with him. The original AVERY earned a Michelin star in 2021, and the Edinburgh version is already making the kind of noise that suggests history is about to repeat itself.
The 12-course tasting menu at £149 is a journey that moves between California and Scotland simultaneously. Dishes built around Orkney scallops and Highland venison arrive with the bold, confident flavours that Wages developed on the West Coast. The drinks flight spans sherry, sake, wine, and Scotch whisky and is as carefully considered as everything else on the plate. This is a restaurant for an occasion book early and arrive hungry.
5. Eleanore – Brilliant Cooking at a Surprisingly Honest Price
Cuisine: Modern European
Price Range: £££
Address: 30-31 Albert Place, Leith Walk, Edinburgh EH7 5HN
Best Dish: Set dinner menu — changes seasonally
Eleanore comes from chef Roberta Hall, who also runs the acclaimed Little Chartroom nearby, and it shares that restaurant’s commitment to doing things properly without making a fuss about it. The set dinner menu is £75 per person, which feels genuinely fair given the quality of what arrives on the plate.
The room has an industrial Scandi feel clean lines, natural tones, plenty of light and the atmosphere is lively and warm without feeling noisy. The cooking is playful and modern, and the kitchen goes out of its way to accommodate dietary requirements as long as you flag them in advance. Leith is the neighbourhood to explore for serious dining in Edinburgh right now, and Eleanore is one of the strongest reasons why.
6. The Kitchin – A Leith Legend with a Michelin Star
Cuisine: Scottish with French Influences
Price Range: ££££

The restaurant sits on Commercial Quay in Leith and has become one of the most celebrated dining destinations in Scotland over the past two decades.
The philosophy here is “nature to plate” which means every dish is built around seasonal, sustainably sourced Scottish ingredients at their absolute best. Expect langoustines, halibut, game, and some of the finest shellfish Scotland’s waters produce. The service is warm and knowledgeable without ever feeling stiff or overly formal. If you cannot get a table at The Kitchin itself, Tom Kitchin also runs other Edinburgh venues that operate at a similar standard.
7. Barry Fish – The Most Exciting Seafood Restaurant in Leith
Cuisine: Seafood
Price Range: £££
Address: Shore, Leith, Edinburgh
Best Dish: Hand-dived scallops with parsnip and apple purée
Barry Fish is one of the most talked-about new openings in Edinburgh right now, and for very good reason. Chef Barry Bryson previously a high-profile events chef has opened a restaurant right on the shore in Leith that has already earned a place in the Michelin Guide within its first year of operation. That is a remarkable achievement and tells you everything about the quality coming out of this kitchen.
The scallops are the dish people talk about most. Two plump, perfectly seared hand-dived scallops resting on a bed of parsnip and apple purée, finished with a smoked fish sauce it is the kind of dish that stays in your memory long after the meal is over. The cocktail list is creative and the atmosphere is relaxed and genuinely welcoming. Barry Fish is not trying to be a run-of-the-mill seafood restaurant, and it absolutely succeeds in being something better.
8. The Spence at Gleneagles Townhouse – Grand Setting, Even Grander Food
Cuisine: Modern Scottish Fine Dining

The concept is Thai fusion with a genuinely inventive approach this is not a safe, predictable menu but a kitchen that is clearly having fun with flavours and textures. The crispy pork belly papaya salad in particular has been described by diners as one of the best dishes they have eaten in the city.
The room is stylish with an open kitchen, a proper bar, and low lighting that creates a great atmosphere for both couples and groups. The price point is considerably more accessible than many of the other restaurants on this list, making Ka Pao one of the best value spots in Edinburgh for food that genuinely excites. It gets busy quickly so booking ahead is strongly recommended.

Cuisine: Seafood
Price Range: ££
Address: 24-26 The Shore, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6QN

The Ship on the Shore in Leith has been a trusted favourite for locals and visitors for years, and it delivers exactly what it promises exceptionally fresh seafood in a relaxed, welcoming setting right on the water. The seafood arrives daily from sustainable sources, which you can taste in every dish.
The fish and chips here are among the best in Edinburgh the batter is light and perfectly crisp, the fish inside is fresh and generous. For something more adventurous, the seafood mix of Scottish mussels, baby clams, calamari, and giant prawns is a firm favourite among regulars. When the weather is good, the harbourfront setting in Leith makes eating here feel like a small holiday. When it rains which in Edinburgh it sometimes does the cosy interior is just as good.
