Nobody Drafted Him. He Showed Up Anyway.
There is a moment in every undrafted player’s story where the easy path would be to walk away.
No team wanted T.J. McConnell in the 2015 NBA Draft. No guaranteed contract. No fanfare. No certainty that professional basketball would ever be part of his life in any meaningful way.
He showed up anyway.
Ten years later, McConnell has become only the second player in NBA history alongside Lou Williams to record 3,000 assists off the bench a milestone that places him in genuinely rare company. He has played in the NBA Finals. He has broken league records. And he has done all of it without ever being the most talented player in the room.
That is the T.J. McConnell story. And it is worth telling properly.
Where It All Started — Bridgeville, Pennsylvania
Timothy John McConnell Jr. was born on March 25, 1992. He attended Chartiers Valley High School in the Pittsburgh-area borough of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, where he played for his own father, Tim.
That detail playing for his father matters more than it might seem. It speaks to a household where basketball was not just a hobby but a shared language, a family pursuit, a thing passed down with intention.
As team captain his senior year, McConnell averaged 34.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 9.1 assists per game, earned first-team all-state honours, and was named Pennsylvania Class 3A Player of the Year. He led his team to a 29–2 record, the WPIAL championship, and a berth in the state championship game.
Those are not the numbers of someone who sneaked into college basketball. Those are the numbers of a player who dominated at every level he played and who would spend the rest of his career proving that the people who underestimated him were wrong.
It is also worth noting that Bridgeville is where T.J. McConnell grew up alongside Valerie Guiliani the woman who would later become his wife. Their story began in the same community, at roughly the same time as his basketball journey. The two have never really been separate. College Basketball — Building Something Real at Arizona
After high school, McConnell’s path to the elite level of college basketball was not immediate. He began at Duquesne before transferring to the University of Arizona and it was at Arizona where his game truly developed into something that professional scouts would eventually take seriously.
In the 2013–14 season, McConnell helped lead the Wildcats to a 21–0 record to start the season. The season culminated in an Elite Eight appearance.
As a senior, McConnell was voted first-team All-Pac-12 and named to the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team, and he helped lead Arizona to another Elite Eight appearance.
The defensive recognition was telling. McConnell was never going to be the player who won games through sheer athleticism or scoring explosions. His value was always in the details reading the game, disrupting opponents, making the right decision under pressure. Those qualities are harder to scout than a 40-inch vertical, which is probably part of why the NBA draft passed him over entirely.
On December 18, 2024, McConnell became the 34th Arizona Wildcat to have his name inducted into the Arizona Basketball Ring of Honor, doing so by playing 10 years in the NBA. A fitting recognition for a player who gave that programme everything he had.
The Philadelphia 76ers — Proving the Doubters Wrong
After going undrafted in the 2015 NBA Draft, McConnell signed with the Philadelphia 76ers on September 27, 2015.
That signing was not a statement of belief from the 76ers it was an opportunity, nothing more. The league is full of undrafted players who sign training camp deals and never appear in a regular season game. McConnell was determined not to be one of them.
He played well during preseason, averaging 6.2 points and 4.8 assists in five games, earning himself a spot on the 76ers’ opening night roster.
From there, he built his reputation one game at a time. On January 6, 2017, he recorded a career-high 17 assists in a 110–106 loss to the Boston Celtics, becoming just the fourth player in franchise history to hit that mark in a single contest.
He spent four seasons in Philadelphia four seasons of showing up, competing, and proving that his place in the league was earned rather than given.
Indiana Pacers, Finding a Home
On July 3, 2019, McConnell signed a two-year deal worth $7 million with the Indiana Pacers.
What happened next is the part of his story that truly defines his legacy.
In Indiana, McConnell found a team and a system that understood exactly what he offered. He became one of the most reliable and respected bench players in the league a player coaches trusted in critical moments precisely because he never tried to do more than his role required.
On March 3, 2021, McConnell broke the NBA record for most steals in a half with 9. He also became the first player since Mookie Blaylock in 1998 to record a triple-double with points, steals, and assists and the first ever to do so off the bench.
That performance was not a fluke. It was the result of years of preparation, focus, and the kind of defensive intensity that most players are not willing to sustain over the long haul of an NBA season.
In August 2021, the Pacers rewarded him with a 4-year, $35 million contract extension. For a player who entered the league without a single team willing to draft him, that contract represented something significant genuine, long-term belief from an organisation that had seen what he could do every day in practice and in games.
The NBA Finals — A Historic Moment
The crowning achievement of McConnell’s career to date came in 2025, when the Indiana Pacers reached the NBA Finals.
On June 11, 2025, McConnell recorded 10 points, 5 assists, and 5 steals in Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. He became the first player in NBA history to record 10+ points, 5+ assists, and 5+ steals off the bench in an NBA Finals game.
Read that again. First player in NBA history. In an NBA Finals game. Coming off the bench.
For a player who went undrafted a decade earlier, that moment represents something extraordinary not just personal achievement, but a kind of validation that statistics alone cannot fully capture.
2026 — Still Going, Still Competing
In the 2025–26 season, McConnell is averaging 9.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game for the Indiana Pacers.
On January 16, 2026, McConnell joined Lou Williams as only the second player in NBA history to record 3,000 assists off the bench. That milestone quietly places him among the most productive bench players the game has ever seen.
He is currently playing under a four-year, $44.8 million contract extension with the Pacers a reflection of the organisation’s continued belief in what he brings to the team beyond the box score.
He has also recently been managing a hamstring injury, which has limited his availability in the latter part of the season a reminder that even the most durable and determined players are not immune to the physical demands of a decade in professional basketball.
McConnell was also named one of six finalists for the NBA’s Sportsmanship Award perhaps the most fitting recognition imaginable for a player whose entire career has been defined by doing things the right way.
What Makes T.J. McConnell Different
Statistics tell part of the story. They do not tell all of it.
What makes McConnell genuinely interesting beyond the records and the contract and the Finals appearance is the consistency of his approach over an entire decade. He has never reinvented himself. He has never tried to become something he is not. He identified what he was good at very early, committed to being exceptional at those specific things, and has spent ten years delivering on that commitment.
Defensive intensity. Decision-making. Effort. Reliability. These are not glamorous qualities in a league that celebrates highlight plays and individual brilliance. But they are the qualities that earn the respect of coaches, teammates, and serious basketball fans and McConnell has accumulated that respect in abundance.
The other part of his story that deserves recognition is the life he has built away from the court. His relationship with Valerie Guiliani the woman who has been by his side since their childhood in Bridgeville has provided the kind of stable foundation that makes sustained excellence over a long career possible. Behind every athlete who performs consistently at the highest level, there is usually a support structure that never makes the headlines. For McConnell, that structure starts at home.

Conclusion
T.J. McConnell’s career is a ten-year argument against the idea that talent is the only thing that matters.
He was not supposed to make an NBA roster. He was not supposed to last four seasons in Philadelphia. He was certainly not supposed to break NBA records, sign a $44 million contract, or make history in the NBA Finals.
He did all of those things anyway through effort, intelligence, and an absolute refusal to be defined by what other people decided he was worth.
For fans of basketball who appreciate what the game looks like when someone plays it completely right, McConnell is about as good an example as the current NBA has to offer.
And for anyone curious about the person behind the player the life, the values, the foundation the story of Valerie Guiliani and the partnership they built since childhood is where that deeper picture comes together.
