Hourly to salary formula
The standard formula is annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks worked per year. A full-time job of 40 hours for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours a year, so an hourly rate of 20 gives 41,600 a year. To go the other way, divide your annual salary by 2,080 (or by your own hours per year). If you take unpaid leave, subtract those weeks from 52 first.

How overtime pay is calculated
Overtime pay = hourly rate × overtime multiplier × overtime hours. At time and a half (1.5×), a worker on 20 an hour earns 30 for every overtime hour, so 10 hours of overtime adds 300 to the week.
Overtime rules in the US
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, most non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Some states, such as California, also have daily overtime rules. Exempt employees are not covered.
Overtime rules in the UK
UK law does not give a general right to enhanced overtime pay, so it depends on your contract or your employer policy. Your pay must still meet the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage when averaged over the hours you work.
US No Tax on Overtime deduction
For tax years 2025 to 2028, eligible workers can deduct qualified overtime compensation from federal taxable income, up to $12,500 ($25,000 on a joint return). Only the premium part of overtime that federal law requires counts, which is the extra half in time and a half. The deduction phases out above $150,000 of modified adjusted gross income ($300,000 for joint filers), and Social Security and Medicare tax still apply. The Overtime tab shows an estimate and lets you carry it into the US take-home pay calculation.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate annual salary from an hourly wage?
Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week and by 52 weeks. For example, 25 an hour for 40 hours a week is 52,000 a year (25 × 40 × 52). Subtract any unpaid weeks off from the 52 first.
How much is 20 an hour per year?
At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, 20 an hour is 41,600 a year, or about 3,466.67 a month before tax.
How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the annual salary by the hours you work in a year. For a 40-hour week that is 2,080 hours, so a salary of 50,000 is about 24.04 an hour.
How is overtime pay calculated?
Multiply your regular hourly rate by the overtime multiplier and by the number of overtime hours. Time and a half uses 1.5 and double time uses 2. At 20 an hour, 10 hours of time and a half pays 300.
Do UK employers have to pay time and a half?
No. UK law has no general right to enhanced overtime pay, so it depends on your contract or employer policy. Your pay must still meet the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage when averaged over the hours you work.
Do US employers have to pay overtime?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, most non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states add daily overtime rules, and exempt employees are not covered.

For tax years 2025 to 2028, eligible workers can deduct qualified overtime pay from federal taxable income, up to $12,500 ($25,000 on a joint return). Only the premium part of overtime required by federal law counts, meaning the extra half of time and a half. The deduction phases out above $150,000 of modified adjusted gross income ($300,000 joint), and Social Security and Medicare tax still apply.
