How the Fight Unfolded
Benn came out fast in round one, looking to close the distance and throw combinations, while Garcia used his reach advantage and footwork to keep Benn at range and land his trademark left hook. In round two, Garcia dropped Benn with a huge right hand, and although Benn got back to his feet, Garcia unloaded a barrage of shots along the ropes that prompted referee Thomas Taylor to step in and stop the fight at 1:25 of the round. Garcia entered the bout as a heavy -330 betting favorite and had predicted a knockout win beforehand.
Why This Fight Mattered
Garcia and Benn had a personal rivalry dating back roughly two years, stemming from an altercation at an awards show that Garcia referenced in the build-up to the fight. Garcia won his WBC welterweight title in February 2026 with a wide unanimous decision over Mario Barrios, and this bout marked his first title defense. Benn entered off a decision win over Regis Prograis in April and was fighting at 147 pounds for the first time since April 2022, having spent his two previous high-profile bouts against Chris Eubank Jnr at a catchweight.

The undercard also delivered its own share of drama, with Sean Garcia extending the familyu2019s winning night and Jai Opetaia reinforcing his status as the top cruiserweight in the sport with a late stoppage of a previously unbeaten opponent.
What Garcia Said After the Win
Speaking after the stoppage, Garcia immediately called out two-division champion Teofimo Lopez, saying he wanted to fight him next. He also reignited talk of a rematch with WBO titleholder Devin Haney, whom Garcia beat in 2023 before that result was overturned to a no contest following a failed drug test. Boxing insiders note that a Lopez fight would carry a slightly higher risk for Garcia given Lopezu2019s two-weight championship pedigree, while a Haney rematch offers a bigger commercial draw given their unresolved history, meaning the choice between the two is likely to come down to negotiations over money rather than styles. Analyst Mark Kriegel said of the performance, “What boxing told us was that Ryan Garcia was great tonight.”
What This Means for the Welterweight Division
The dominant win boosts Garcia’s standing as one of the sport’s biggest stars and strengthens his leverage in negotiating his next fight. Benn, who hinted before the bout that this might be his last fight at 147 pounds regardless of the outcome, could now move up to super welterweight or middleweight, where he would have no shortage of high-profile options. For Garcia, a fight with Lopez or a rematch with Haney would set up one of the biggest bouts in the sport over the next year.
How This Fight Fits Garciau2019s Career Arc
Garciau2019s path to this title defense has been anything but smooth. Before claiming the WBC welterweight belt in February 2026, he suffered a high-profile loss to Rolando Romero in 2025 and had his famous 2023 win over Devin Haney erased from the record books after a failed drug test turned the result into a no contest. Saturdayu2019s dominant stoppage of Benn is being read by boxing analysts as a genuine turning point, the kind of statement win that separates a talented, star-powered fighter from a fighter who consistently performs at the championship level when it matters most.
What It Means for Conor Benn
For Benn, the loss extends a difficult run at welterweight, having now lost two of his last four fights at the weight. Before the bout, he had already signaled that campaigning at 147 pounds might not continue much longer regardless of the outcome, citing how brutal the weight cut had become. A move up to super welterweight or middleweight now looks likely, where his frame and power could translate into fresh opportunities against a new set of opponents rather than continuing to chase a rematch he is unlikely to be offered after this result.
What Happens Next?
Watch for negotiations between Garcia’s team and promoters for either a Teofimo Lopez fight or a Devin Haney rematch, both of which Garcia name-checked in his post-fight comments. Benn is expected to reassess his weight class before his next bout, with a move up from welterweight looking increasingly likely after this loss.
